Delta Sigma Theta was founded in 1913 at Howard University, Washington, D.C., by twenty-two collegiate women.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., is a public service sorority that is focused on a commitment to community service, civic endeavors, and the concerns and welfare of  humankind.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., is dedicated to public service and has been since its inception.

Service projects implementing the Sorority's Five Point Program Thrust of Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement are actively promoted.  The sorority has grown to include more than 200,000 members worldwide. There are more than 900 chapters in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, The Virgin Islands, Bermuda, The Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea.

The Farwest Region consists of the states of: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Japan (Okinawa and Tokyo) and the Republic of Korea (Seoul) are the international chapters that are a part of the Farwest Region.

The Tempe Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Tempe, Arizona on June 9, 1973. Over the years, Tempe Alumnae Chapter continues to fulfill our founders' dreams of achieving excellence, providing scholarship, and rendering public service to the community. The members of Tempe Alumnae will continue to strive to have a visible presence within the community it serves and to develop more innovative programs for the future.
